This essentially authoritarian idea will celebrate two big victories today. And it won't be satisfied.

Trump's (functional) acquittal and Brexit happening on the same day really hammers home the nature of our current crisis: an assault on the rules supposed to constrain and bind ascendant populism from running roughshod over dissenters

It's a crisis of both halves of liberal democracy. It rejects liberalism's protections for minority rights and replaces the democratic ideal of equal citizenship with the populist ideal of a "true" people whose views represent the general will

This is the logic under which the narrow victory of the 2016 referendum is sacrosanct and irreversible, under which Trump cannot be impeached because 63 million voted for him

It's the logic that says pro-European voters in Britain are seditious "remoaners" who can be ignored. It's the logic that Democrats aren't "real Americans," so raw Republican partisanship actually represents authentic patriotism

Seems odd to describe "Leave" as the authoritarian and anti-democratic side given that it won the referendum and the officially pro-Leave governing party has won two consecutive elections since, the second with a thumping margin.

I don't really read the last two UK elections as Brexit referenda given Corbyn's ambivalent stance. Leavers consistently refused a referendum on the terms of the Brexit deal and constantly delegitimized opposition to their plan.

In what sense does giving effect to a referendum result demonstrate a pivot away from democracy?

Literally the opposite of Liberal, which is supposed to mean all things holy and good.
I had a giggle with the cognitive dissonance thinking that Liberalism is about “respecting minorities” whilst hand wringing about how best to repudiate the 63 million people
