It's extremely inside-baseball, but I *so* want someone who does STS to write about how speed/scale are a leaky interface between Engineering and The Business.

Neighborhood cat is safe! And now I’m back home eating the delicious dinner I cooked standing up and out of reach and reckoning with the fact that I have enabled *this* saved cat to be a CHICKIN MONSTER who CANNOT BE TRUSTED near HUMAN FOOD!!!!

There really is nothing more valuable to *everyone* in operational product teams, than spending a few hours a week responding to user support tickets. The insights, the opportunities, the connections with your users, and importantly, the positive feedback are so powerful.

As every Tuesday I share my thoughts about the tech-related world. This time I complain about check-out forms where we're being asked too many questions

Did anyone else start craving a series of mystery novels like Elizabeth Peters' Amelia Peabody books but queer?

A lot of things in modern tech we don't think are useful- up-front design, code comments, estimations- are just skills we aren't pushed to practice. Of course they won't be useful if we're terrible at doing them!

Old Fox is looking after his grand cub, who has been badly bullied at school. He has baked a large cherry cake & has set out a 1000 piece puzzle. Later, they will go for a brisk walk across the fields & gather some kindling for an evening fire & a supper of fried eggs on toast.

I have many opinions on matters where no one wants them. I would be happy to share.

11. And valuing the past only for its aesthetic content constitutes a practice which conditions us to treat people as objects and to reduce our valuation of them to the same way we look at stupid neoclassical buildings

You’re in a long relationship with yourself. I believe you have to spend that time training yourself that you can be trusted. A work in progress!

like I said, don't go abuse the Shadow & Acronym people, though I'd really love to see them do more reflection. do ask, if you know better, why doesn't everyone in this field? what do we need to do to make sure everyone knows all the painful lessons we've learned?

There's all kinds of dysfunction to spare around the Iowa app. We don't need to claim that the tech side was some kind of anomaly to talk about any of it.

We really should not act like 1. every tech project starts with a set of complete and crystal clear requirements that arrive before any code is written 2. every team is correctly staffed in terms of domain expertise 3. elapsed time = time spent working, as opposed to waiting

A colleague once said that they find it peculiarly maddening when tech people are customers and forget everything they've seen/done working on software projects. I'm having a similar reaction to tech people going, "Five MONTHS? For THAT?"
