Today on Dennis read part of Thomas Jefferson's proclamation while Governor of Virginia in 1779 "appointing a Day of Thanksgiving and Prayer to Almighty God." Dennis pointed out that Jefferson is considered by many to be the least religious of the FF's.

This proclamation is a historical document of great significance, foreshadowing the move of a later President, Abraham Lincoln, to have the holiday celebrated at a preset time every year in the century that followed.
