Notch and punch-hole cameras are still a thing on Android phones. Not a rich / poor thing. Let’s not go there. Do Android devices and their browser even bother to work well or give web developers control over their content and how it interacts with the front camera space?

Remember guys! 🧠 You should use the meta tag `viewport-fit=cover` to avoid white margins on devices with notch or any non standard viewport shape. Then you can use environment variables to use safe areas. More info here 👇

Chrome: We're going to implement WebUSB All other browsers: Now hang on, this seems insec- Chrome: TOO LATE! We have features that rely on it now so we also can't get rid of it and change it. Web standards are dead. Chrome is our new master.

Web Inspector Tip: You can use console.screenshot([target]) to capture a screenshot of the given target (e.g. a Node) or the viewport.

Irrelevance for whom? Maybe not being able to use the web as a tool, to compete with native platforms makes it irrelevant for Google, but Google doesn’t speaks for everyone. Without engine diversity the web is no longer open, and that is its largest appeal over native.

Important post about why having multiple browser engines matters. I’d add that the modern movement to take web privacy seriously would never have happened in a single-engine world.

Earlier today, some of the awesome folks at posted about their work to bring ResizeObserver to WebKit. This API is really useful for advanced responsive designs.

If you're not familiar with Safari Technology Preview, it's a preview build of Safari+WebKit with upcoming new web platform features and bug fixes. Similar to Chrome Dev Channel or Firefox Developer Edition. Get it here:

STP 99 is a very much worth trying and testing. It includes the end of plugin support (including Flash) and other changes that we'd really like testing and feedback on.

Web Inspector Tip: you can use local overrides to test modifications or debug HTML and JavaScript content loaded over the network instead of updating the file on your server.

Yesterday I discovered Webkit’s “Inspector Bootstrap Script” from their excellent (and seemingly new) Web Inspector documentation. Today I used it to automatically translate some unreadable JSON-like payload into readable actual JSON. Thanks team!

I posted this yesterday because I saw people tweeting that we're heading for a WebKit-only world. (a) I think they mean Blink-only. (b) Not on our watch.

My deepest sympathies to everyone affected by the Mozilla layoffs. If anyone would like to think about positions on WebKit or Safari, my DMs are open.

The Mozilla news sucks. If you've lost your job and are looking for something similar (both in topic and underdogginess), I might be able to help.

Today is a good day to remind people that Blink and WebKit are not the same thing. Blink is the browser engine used by Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers. WebKit is the browser engine used by Safari, among others. Blink forked a while ago. The two are quite different now.
