I don't think it's helpful to redefine words. Intuitive literally means the ability to use something without conscious thought.

What Tony said. A person who is trained in a good notation now has the ability to see and navigate in that domain "without conscious thought".

I'd argue that both circuits and music notation are somewhat intuitive in the first sense too. A notation-novice who knows the domain would probably guess that lines mean wires, or that blobs mean notes and higher means "higher-pitch". That counts even though the rest takes work.

You actually meant "... the rests take work (as well as the clef)", right? flat.io/score/56d0b337…

Thanks for sharing! It reminded me of this quote from Dijkstra - "Being abstract is something profoundly different from being vague … The purpose of abstraction is not to be vague, but to create a new semantic level in which one can be absolutely precise."

But unlike a musical instrument, the UI we create can educate the user how to create within it and extend it into new worlds.

This makes me think of the model:
"Unconscious Unknowing" -->
"Conscious Unknowing" -->
"Conscious Knowing" -->
"Unconscious Knowing"
For some, "intuition" might mean "being able to skip stages two and/or three of this process."
For others, it might mean "being at stage four."

Related: I personally practice this alternative to BDUF: I call it DBGA (design by groping around).
