This sounds like a Modernist revisionist approach to the Old Masters. In what sense was da Vinci _diametrically_ opposed to Verrocchio? Or Raphael to Perugino? Or Titian to Giorgione? They extended their work & deepened it & modified their course over time.

The problem is that only a certain level of creativity can be communicated from master to student. In many cases, the genius of the master is an impediment in that it overwhelms the student. We can't all be Michelangelo.

just did an episode on Froebel’s Gifts (you’re probs already aware of em) and how they may have been a key aspect of unlocking some very creative thinking (Klee, etc). Interesting linkup!

And how froebel's gifts only existed for a short period and were replaced by a much simpler subset.

Somewhat related: the documentary “Tim’s Vermeer” was excellent.
