Sad to see leftists adopting the logic of austerity to justify setting our sights on social democracy when we could strive for freedom.

I am a Greek citizen who has lived in the UK since 1985. On Brexit day I want to say: I have no fondness for the EU – it destroyed my country. I'm not going to paint my face blue and gold. But I loathe much more the little England nationalism that mobilizes the Brexit narrative.

I think there are some clear unforced errors like name resolution (though these matter more for IDE responsiveness than batch throughput)

ok, i've got an idea that i think will "solve" a lot of software licensing "problems"
it's called the "you're only allowed to use this if you're willing to pirate it license"
to use it, create a file called "COPYING.txt" in your project that contains the text "no"

People always ask me how do you balance being the best programmer in the world with being incredibly popular and attractive? And I always tell them, you know, it’s not easy

I agree completely and have said that there are forms of inconsistency that are problematic - my claim is that formatting lints go well beyond

This is what’s so frustrating: “consistency” means nothing! You need to be concrete about what inconsistency is problematic and how that justifies the downsides of formatters and linters

I’ve already said in a separate thread (and on internals when blocking on tidy was first proposed) that this should be done by bors if it must be done, so that i can don’t have to merge the commits into my branch

Abjectly false. Different formatting of the same syntax is not difficult for new users to understand. Syntactically distinct expressions with the same semantics can be challenging, but formatters explicitly don’t do anything about this

And sorry but I must say I especially detest hearing cliches like „code is more often read than written“ as if they were a contextually relevant argument

My entire point is beyond a very bare minimum set of standards this does not matter. PRs shouldn’t turn red because they put an extra newline between statements, because they chose a different way to break up a function invokation across lines, etc

Linting does not make code easier to read. Everyone is responding as if this absurd claim had not already occurred to me

Rust fmt regularly makes my code worse, changing indent structure and groupings which highlighted meaningful things

My point is there is nothing *to do*. Reject PRs that violate the basic rules I’ve outlined - Rust even lints casing - and otherwise leave the code how it was written

It’s perfectly natural that any projects tooling assumes you have set up a build environment. It just so happens that setting up a build environment for rust takes upwards of hours

I don’t understand how no one can see the middle ground between chaos and what rustfmt does

This is what I find so absurd! It’s not chaos. In Rust we have all agreed on the bare minimum we need (4 space indents, casing conventions) - any further fmting rules are harmful
