The advantage to learning to program on an Apple ][ was it taught you how to write everything from scratch. The disadvantage was that it didn’t teach you not to write everything from scratch.

Learning to program in UCSD Pascal on an Apple ][ also taught you the patience to watch your code complie at two lines per second.

Wasn’t that, like, a three-pass compiler or something? It was stunning how slow it was. I wrote Light Cycles in it. Turns out that’s a boring-ass game.

Same with PC/MS-DOS. Nobody told me it wasn’t an OS. I thought it was perfectly reasonable that every app that made non-trivial use of the serial port had a driver built in.
