My journalism students at had *zero* news experience, yet I told them they had 5 weeks to go from idea to execution on a digital media product (gulp). They rose to the challenge and told multimedia stories of safety and vulnerability. Inspiring stuff.

Wonderful to see! And I'm sure the folks at would agree that we also should applaud the "everyday" journalists -- those pushing through despite dwindling resources, increasing threats, and, for most, a career without such wonderful public recognition.

15 human rights activists were just convicted as "terrorists" for non-violently locking their necks to a plane being used for unlawful deportations. If that doesn't summarize the state of the world in 2018 I don't know what does.

There is no consistency in how mass arrests are depicted in Western media. If this took place in a "hostile" country, it would be declared state-sponsored repression by an authoritarian regime

And most of them local. With fewer and fewer watchdogs (let alone regional investigative journalists), we're entering a heyday of local corruption. via

"Punk rock always has been, in many ways, about considering life's proverbial glass, declaring it half empty, and then pretending it's half full. Few bands sculpted this mix of bitterness and euphoria better than Buzzcocks."

The dictionary definitions are all accurate. But if someone asked you which is a greater threat, an autocrat or a dictator, how would you respond? In my mind it's certainly the latter. And I think choosing otherwise minimizes the danger, whether it's intentional or not.

Yeah my tweet wasn't clear at all was it? :) Sorry about that. My point is that a word like "dictator" has a much clearer meaning to most people -- there's an emotion behind it, and a communication of the threat.

This is a great example of how language can distort and minimize the true threats we are facing. These people are not "autocrats." They're dictators. Authoritarians. As journalists, we need to call a spade a spade. And a fascist a fascist.

For Trump, and all authoritarians, immigrants are not actually a threat; they’re a strategy.
