in case you're wondering, i got it to crash again on purpose and it fails safely in the sense that it cools down. not sure if accidentally or that was designed on purpose

I haven’t used my soldering iron in over 20 years, but I know it is a simple electrical heating device with a thermal regulator circuit: firmware? Far more complex than valuable!

When it crashed, it started heating uncontrollably, or did it cool down?

Don't know if I should laugh, or just be happy mine is I think a 20 year old copy of a 50 year old design.

it didn't actually crash as it turns out, it was just reporting an undervoltage condition in a bad way. but more generally: I got exactly what I bargained for, and I'm happy with the tradeoff. you do you
