I knew *my* answer, but I was just interested to see whether people thought the conference organisers were being unreasonable in expecting me to pay for the privilege of chairing one of their sessions. We certainly don’t do that in meetings...

They were asking me to provide my time and (modest) expertise to making their conference a success, and proposing to charge me for the privilege of doing so... I would have had the enjoyment of doing it and minimal embellishment of my CV. I wouldn’t and haven’t paid for that.

That’s exactly what I did. The conference chair said if they waived my fee they’d have to do it for 200 other participants, which if the attendance is similar to their last event is about 20% of their income - probably about €50,000...

opinion please: I’ve been asked to chair a session in an apparently reputable conference. I was told that chairs were “self funding”. I thought that this meant they would not pay our expenses, but... (1/2)
