It's a pretty solid rule of thumb, geophysics or otherwise.

I'm going to back away from this thread now, since it doesn't seem to be going in a very productive direction. I'm very sorry that I upset you by not returning your phone calls a few years ago, though I can assure you that it wasn't for the reasons you claim here.

During specific events (wildfires, big storms, climate reports, new papers, etc.) I'll get 50+ requests in a single week! There are days when I can't use my personal cell phone since it never stops ringing. I suspect folks like @KHayhoe sometimes have a similar experience!

I was never a student at UCLA. And yes, that is indeed the kind of volume of media requests I receive in a typical year (it is indeed overwhelming. Once again, I am sorry that I must have missed your calls--there are days/weeks when I can only respond to a fraction.

I'm...more than a little confused by your statements here. I don't recall ever being contacted by you? I apologize if I've missed phone calls from you in the past-I typically receive over 1000 media requests each year & am often overwhelmed by the volume/unable to respond to all.

Some parts of SoCal did indeed experience record warm daytime high temperatures in recent days, which by definition is not typical. "Cold Santa Ana" winds, though, do sometimes occur in winter--& can result in dramatic temp swings. We just haven't seen them often in recent years!

Raining in the Alps even above 2000 m altitude... Just doesn't feel like winter in much of Europe. pic.twitter.com/nYFqcQilDq

Indeed! (Also worth noting that Pineapple Express still exists in West Coast met lingo--it just now refers to a particular subset of atmospheric rivers that have warm/wet subtropical origins near Hawaii. :) )

The most frustrating aspect of this is that the actual scientific term is actually quite accessible from a science communication perspective. Since when is "#AtmosphericRiver" not evocative enough?

Where's the wind?!? You can see the incoming weather maker on this mornings satellite imagery, currently pushing into Oregon and Northern California. Winds will pick up late this afternoon across the region as the system moves in! #nvwx #cawx #azwx pic.twitter.com/hYVesdEeER

For all those wondering why the 'Medieval Warm Period' does not look warm, it is because the evidence suggests it was NOT a globally coherent event. Please update your understanding.

Very strong, damaging NW-N wind event for #SoCal Sun afternoon-early Mon. Gusts 50-70 mph most areas, isolated 80-90 mph. Downed trees, large tree limbs & powerlines, power outages likely, strong cross winds! #CAwx pic.twitter.com/NPIr4pLxjd

Some spots recorded #wxrecord high temps for today.
@flyLAXairport 81° which breaks the old record of 79° in 1954.
@LBAirport 84° which breaks the old record 83° in 1995.

We hit a new unofficial record high at Reno-Tahoe International Airport today which breaks the record of 66°F set February 1, 1934! This is also the earliest in a calendar year that we have been this warm since Reno climate records began in 1888! pic.twitter.com/cF2HVHh7ao
