honestly for me it's not even about the details anymore, it's the whole holistic ethos.
apps shouldn't have to be paranoid about using system APIs. the system shouldn't be my adversary.
and if it's going to be adversarial (and more so over time), i'm sure done paying for it

While I might be playing roulette on some features of libre phones, or admittedly gambling a bit on delivery deadlines... at least with those gambles, even if I "lose", I'm funding attempts at making the world I want to live in.
And it's become clear that funding android: isn't.

If I'm playing that kind of roulette when I buy android devices... well then!
I might as fucking well throw that much money -- *or more* -- at the libre ecosystems. The libre ecosystems are also roulette for different reasons, but at least match my ethics.

"Where to?" you might ask?
At this point when I throw down 700$ on an android device, I'm playing roulette on whether or not it will work by the time I trust it. (Installing alternate OSes is getting harder over time, not easier.)

I _Don't. Know._ what part of my phone it is that I distrust and have to replace if I don't want the keyboard itself to be universal, cross-app spyware.
I think I'm going to be making an exit from the Android ecosystem now.

Is that pre-installed Google keyboard and its Google-powered online-learning sending-my-keystrokes-to-the-ether predictive text system the root of the problem?
I don't even know. twitter.com/cillic/status/… makes it sound like it's elsewhere.
I DON'T. KNOW.

It really concerns me that the keyboard itself on my phone is now a serious part of the threat model.
And it doesn't escape my attention that the latest time I purchased an Android phone, the *only* keyboard it has is a Google keyboard. twitter.com/cillic/status/…

The whole set of experiments is cool, and how they demonstrate Matrix's cultural vision and commitment towards principals of decentralization and p2p is why I'm cheering for Matrix in the long run.
... but seeing demos is pretty dang fun too. 🎉

@matrixdotorg demos :
• homeservers transpiling to WASM
• and running in the browser in serviceworkers
• they're linked to @libp2p using js-libp2p
• and they're finding and pinging each other
• and IT WORKS.
this is probably one of the coolest things I've seen at FOSDEM

What if... we could run the matrix homeserver... in the browser? 🧐🤔🤪
You all, they DID IT they DID THE THING
starting at 20:02 -- yup yup, they're transpiling their golang server into WASM and then rigging it up to js-libp2p to deploy in the browser!!

This demo, "experiment 2", is still with the matrix homeserver running on your computer in a docker container.
BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE:

libp2p -- libp2p.io -- is Experiment 2, starting at 13:00... and there's a *live demo* 🎉🎉🎉 of libp2p matrix starting around 16:09.
We get to see a half dozen of viable addresses and a pubkey peerID scrolling by... Matrix homeserver takes peerID as a hostname!

So first and foremost, you can see the sheer commitment Matrix has to making p2p work in the fact that they've got THREE experiments they're pursuing, and this talk covers all of them.
Experiment 1 is Yggdrasil -- at 11:20ish -- more at yggdrasil-network.github.io

just watched the @matrixdotorg video from FOSDEM and it is 🔥🔥🔥
They clearly really truly care about going P2P and making Matrix for everyone... and even got some good demos in! 👏

Yeah, I see this as a significant problem.
And we're going to collectively rediscover it the hard way, apparently. twitter.com/DRMacIver/stat…
