No one wants people to drown in the Mediterranean, but for that you need a system to separate asylum seekers from economic migrants, as well as addressing the root issues that cause people to flee. The alternative is to accept a sizeable fraction of African population in Europe.

Agreed, the hypocrisy of the supposed EU leaders is quite annoying. After all these years, there is still nothing resembling a plan on how to deal w/ immigration from Africa and Middle East.

FWIW I admit that, to me, B. Sanders seems like the only genuinely decent person among the frontrunners(Warren feels like a garden-variety populist), but as you say, a) their proposals are probably economically infeasible,

Given how nothing ever gets done on this front, I think a bit of panic and outrage would actually be healthy. But you are right that the rules must be for everyone- either will we tackle this together, or we will burn/starve together(apparently the most likely scenario right now)
