"Jesus Is Lord" is an intensely political statement. It violently angers other claimants to sovereignty.

If God has placed us in relationships that bring out the worst in us, it’s because indeed HE WANTS TO BRING OUT THE WORST IN US. Permanently out, plucked up by the bloody roots. It’s because He is faithful to us, unstoppably devoted to finishing the good work He started in us.

Run for your life from this thread this morning. Here’s what the Lord is bringing to light in my dark heart. What we resent most about our hardest relationships is what they bring out in us. In easier ones our pleasant self-deceptions of being wonderful blameless people flourish.

I’m laying here in bed reading through John 12 & 13 from the passion translation and I’m literally weeping at the love, wisdom, servanthood and leadership that Jesus openly gives. I’m convicted. I’m inspired. I love Jesus.

I remember being in my 20s & wondering if the more I learned about the world, the more I‘d realize there were many answers. The reverse happened. The longer I’ve lived, the surer I’ve become that Jesus is the only cure for this sick world. No better news on earth than the gospel.

Had a friend say this to me today and it pretty near floored me. “If you don’t think you can truly be freed from your sin until you die, Jesus isn’t your saviour; death is.” Doozy.

Until the desire to be seen turns into the dread of it, you’ve perhaps not quite yet become acquainted with the life of the Christian leader. Longevity is learning to die to both desire & dread of seenness. It’s to keep showing up, that somehow by some wonder Jesus might be seen.

The great dilemma of Christian leadership is that we want to lead, not serve. We want to be up front in the fresh air and full view, not down below with the whiff of feet. Nothing on earth will flatten you like leading. To start there and learn to stay there is less traumatizing.

As a pastor, I’ve had periods of depression and anxiety and felt so alone. I wondered if there was grace for bad days for me because of my job. The answer is yes. I am a human after all and Jesus is faithful.

Secular society is an area already occupied by other gods. We have a battle on our hands. We are dealing with principalities and powers.

It’s got me SO grieved and annoyed and on edge. It’s also challenged me to read the Gospel accounts again. Jesus ushered in a NEW and BETTER Kingdom. Not a political one like the Jews hoped for...
