The #FirstStepAct was a good 1st step. But more steps are needed to foster an environment rooted in human dignity—w/ the primary focus of preparing people to return to their communities—for the millions already incarcerated in our #CJsystem: bit.ly/2QBOexo #SOTU

The #FirstStepAct only affected about 12% of the nation's incarcerated pop—those in federal custody. There's still work to be done to fix our #CJsystem. Our #StateOf2019 report examines the new law's rocky start in 2019. #SOTU bit.ly/392Blml

In an era of polarization, the #FirstStepAct shows the American people one thing:
📢#CJreform is bipartisan📢
In our #StateOf2019 report, discover the work still ahead to fix our flawed #CJsystem. #SOTU bit.ly/392Blml

In 2018, the #FirstStepAct became law.
But it’s just that: a 1st step.
More steps are needed:
✅Lifting ban on #PellGrants
✅Diverting people w/ substance use & mental health issues away from #CJsystem
✅Ending money bail & MORE.

Even a brief stint in jail can ruin someone’s career, housing, & access to services—potentially continuing their involvement with the #CJsystem.

In 2019, the U.S. saw a surge of anti-immigrant policies drastically reducing refugee caps, targeting people already in the country, and ramping up obstacles for immigrants and refugees. Learn more in our #StateOf2019 report. bit.ly/2ui6Bio pic.twitter.com/hX2LYz27QM

Nearly 62% of people detained in jails are there, not because it’s in their best interest, but due to their inability to pay bail. Money injustice creates a cycle of poverty. In NOLA, it’s used to criminalize and incarcerate low-income Black people too. theguardian.com/us-news/2020/f…

Fear shouldn’t trump facts, especially when fear lands people in jail, losing jobs, losing time in school, unable to care for children or get decent health care. @verainstitute has analysis on the impact of bail reform bit.ly/2UoF0Xv #BailReform twitter.com/legalaidnyc/st…

Bail reform doesn’t just impact major cities. It’s also very important for all counties—esp. rural ones—in NYS. In fact, reforms in bail laws allowed Cortland county, a rural county of 48K, to lower their jail population to 56 people—its lowest in years. bit.ly/31pBXjn

In 2017, New York advanced its legacy as a #StateofImmigrants by being the 1st state to provide #DueProcess4All in immigration courts. NYS can continue this leadership by supporting #NYIFUP & funding critical legal protections for #NYimmigrants. bit.ly/3b6PTTU @thenyic pic.twitter.com/ya1Eqo9R8A

James Lesane’s bail was set at $10K.
But, unable to afford it, he was cycled through the #CJsystem—facing violence, separation from family, & blocked access to vital services.
If NYS supports fairness for all of us, we need to give #BailReform a chance: bit.ly/3b8i8S3 pic.twitter.com/AYZAl7q5S1
