Today, I talked to a friend who is an Uber driver who has become so deeply depressed. He works all the time & feels like he’s losing his mind. “This is not life,” he said. Precarious, underpaid gig work is not just an economic problem, it is a major public health issue.

Time to consistently reframe "gig economy" as "financial precarity." It doesn't sound as sexy or cool and that's my point. I LOATHE the word "gig" as if we were all jamming in a pal's basement for kicks. It is our livelihood and this faux-jaunty language is a disservice.

He’s right. The life working people are living today, along with their professional managers are not real lives. We absolutely need to have a deep conversation about the good life...about justice.

I can identify with what he's feeling. I feel like I moved to a cool, new city and was so excited to find a job that was flexible enough to give me time to go out and explore it. 10 months later, I can't afford to leave my apartment for anything other than work. Depressing.

Yeah I relate too. Someone recently said it would be weird when they finally left gig work cycles bc they'd be able to go to a movie without feeling like they could be missing work and holy cow I felt that.

on the flip side I avg $25/hr driving for Uber can cash out immediately (50cent fee), turn the app on/off as I pls I can't think of any other (legal) job where you get instant pay and set your own hrs. What's truly depressing is the cost of housing/living, not gig work

After expences of 10-15 dollars an hour in outgoings expences depreciation of vehicle etc ( these loses are things you don't see until you have a worthless vehicle and possible loan still to pay) leaves about 10-12 dollars an hour and bills to pay.

Talked to 100s of drivers since began analyzing their model over 1+ year ago. Every FULL TIME driver admitted to periods of depression, anxiety, isolation/long wait times, never enough to catch up, feelings of missing out potential earnings. Phych Case to study

The messed up a whole industry. The taxi trade is been put into disrepair because of instant hire cheap rides. The prices of low pay!
