Imo saying that anyone can be a top fighting game player if they try hard enough gives false hope to some players, disregards the aptitude of others, undersells fighting games as a competitive endeavor, & feeds a predatory myth of work that uses inspiration to reinforce hierarchy

Anyone can improve! But I think it's kinda mean to tell people that they're just some number of choices away from being among the best, and it's overly congratulatory to tell people who do become top players that the reason they got to the top was not luck but their own decisions

It takes hard work to get to the top; natural skill alone isn't enough. But imo to recognize that the luck of aptitude, free time, geography, etc played at least as important a role is to take MORE responsibility than to pretend that you're wholly responsible for your own success

Saying that anyone can do it absolves people at the top of the fact that they're there in significant part due to luck. And it makes lower level players view top players as heroes of success, instead of just as people who made the most of a very uncommon set of circumstances

That said, while not everyone can be the best, you'll never know how good you can be if you don't try. Recognizing that luck has a gigantic impact on your potential doesn't mean that you don't have agency & doesn't mean that your decisions don't matter. Few things are preordained

The idea that basically no one can make it kills motivation for many Aptitude is in tons of cases is confirmation bias after tons of effort was put in The idea that only a small group can make it undersells all competitions a lot cause "talented players only" can make it 1/3

Now, I do admit I might have pushed a bit much here but this is honestly what I feel I can't remember ever meeting someone in Smash that properly practiced/tried to learn and remained bad/mediocre. I truly believe a lot/most comes from laziness/blame lack of talent

Certainly hard work plays enough of a role though that if everything else lines up in your favor and you did little to no work or not enough work as the other guy your path of potential gets cut equally as short.

Privilege can be squandered and, at least for some things, even given away entirely, of course

I still think it's dependent on "top player." Is Top 5% attainable? Is top 5% a top player? I feel some people use it to mean, "I could plausibly win Evo" and some people mean "I could be top 1000 in SFV online ranked.
