Can this have any real consequences on you entering the country? i.e. being detained, searched, w/e? To me, these questions have no relevance, not to you entering the country, nor to the agent asking the questions.

I made this same point to her and was told simply to answer the question. It's all a delicate balancing act of knowing when you can stand up for yourself without risking serious inconvenience like detainment etc. I protested, but ultimately complied.
