genomes from China are accumulating a bit of genetic diversity (seen at ). This is expected given RNA virus error-prone replication and does not indicate functional differences. 1/3

The 16 genomes sampled from Wuhan tend to lie at the base of the evolutionary tree with some small offshoots. This fits with an introduction into Wuhan and initial spread within the city (). 2/3

The 12 genomes sampled from Guangdong all appear as offshoots from diversity in Wuhan. There are 3 clusters in the tree, but in each case, we know that this is household cluster. Genomes do not yet show evidence for community spread (). 3/3

What about the diversity of genomes from cases outside of China? Any thoughts on what they say?

Community spread. I wonder what that means. Maybe if many more were infected than reported than more mutation would be expected? Since we don’t see that maybe the Chinese numbers are somewhat accurate?
