Article on the culture of OpenAI gave me weird flashbacks. The author couldn’t know this, but the personalities and ways of thinking are SO familiar from 1988. AI still attracts the same sort of person, subject to the same peculiar cognitive distortions.

We should not believe tech industry narratives that we can build A.I. to "catch" bad speech (in 100+ languages the engineers don't speak). Bring democratic speech back to human-scale processes. See paper: "Is the 1st Amendment obsolete?"

Systems for *democratic speech* would operate at *democracy-scale* scrutiny processes: limit amount of speech we can generate to that which can be reasonably reviewed at human scale. "Drive-by" micro-targeting that *you* hear that your neighbor 1 inch away cannot β‰  democratic.

Exactly. "The answer to bad speech = more speech" is nonsense in a world where you can FLOOD the attn channel. Systems that allow ppl to FLOOD a finite channel w/ exponentially produced, A/B-optimized, micro-targeted, unchecked and un-reviewable speech isn't democratic, PERIOD

During the last mass extinction event 66 million years ago, ocean pH dropped by 0.25, which was enough to wipe out 75% of marine species. On our present emissions trajectory, ocean pH will drop by 0.4 by the end of the century.

I can't believe I have to say this, but the President of the United States has no business interfering in the criminal trial of his own campaign adviser. The Justice Department owes the court and the American people an explanation of exactly what is happening here.

My takeaway from this viral tweet: why is populating its "fact boxes" with random unverified reddit memes? By doing so, Google is admitting a *high-risk* vector for misinformation.

People who deactivated Facebook in a study were happier afterward, reporting higher levels of life satisfaction and lower levels of depression and anxiety. That change is equal to about 25-40% of the beneficial effect typically reported for psychotherapy

We don’t let 1 person control the water for 2.5 billion people. We don’t let 1 person control electricity for 2.5 billion people. Why do we let 1 man control the information seen by 2.5 billion people? Facebook needs to be regulated by governments, not ruled by an emperor!
