if any of my tweets ever go viral I hope it’s this one the GRAND CANYON is facing a big problem right now. there’s no national news coverage about this and some very rich people want to keep it that way

an italian developer (Stilo Development Group USA) purchased 3.5 million square feet of land less than 10 miles from the edge of the Grand Canyon this land is located in the heart of Kaibab National Forest east of Tusayan.

if they get approval from the town, they plan to build over 2000 houses, a spa, a convention center, and potentially a “water park” source -

even worse - the only water source available on this land is groundwater, which is pumped from an aquifer that feeds important springs in the Grand Canyon

more groundwater pumping would lower the aquifer levels and destroy many springs the aquifer is the sole source for Havasupai Falls and Havasu Creek that the Havasupai Tribe relies entirely on

this development project will also drastically increase road and air traffic around the Grand Canyon, as well as noise and light pollution

I beg you to care about this. the Grand Canyon has been a home to Indigenous Americans for over 800 years and a protected national park for 100 years (happy anniversary)

I'm confused. The link said that it was victorious in stopping the development plan

this has been an ongoing battle for a few years now. This article is from 2016 and reporting about the forest service stopping the development of a road to the developers land. We’ve been pretty successful at delaying the development but Stilo is definitely still trying

My bad about that. I used that link because it’s one of the only articles that references the building plans. More recently Stilo got approval from the county to start building a few housing units. Can’t find the article on that rn because I’m at work but I’ll find it later

UPDATE: unfortunately there are currently no active protests or petitions. the best thing to do is write to the town of Tusayan and ask them to keep Stilo out. hopefully now that more people are becoming aware of the threat, a bigger dialogue can be held and we can take action

As of 2018: In January 2019 the county sued and forced them to stop but that’s just another example of how they keep jumping through hoops.

Hey thanks for caring in Canada! Unfortunately I’m not aware of any active protests or petitions besides the Sierra Club. The absolute BEST thing you could do right now is write a letter to the town of Tusayan. I’ll include more details at the bottom of the thread!
