Day 23 - The Borrowers I found the first Borrowers at a yard sale and was immediately won over by its charm. File it under Reasons I Love Britain, as well. It fits in with my fascination with hidden worlds, and while it’s not exactly Victorian fairies...

Day 22 - Douglas Adams Another stone in the foundation of my anglophilia, PLUS FUNNY! Though young me was frequently very defensive about Earth and human habits. The idea of the Infinite Improbability Drive likely left the biggest mark on my young psyche.

Day 21 - Dune I clearly read this too early. NO REGRETS!!! I also saw the epic movie way too young. (And crushed on Paul Atreides) The blue-within-blue eyes stuck with me disproportionately. Probably my first intro to Space Opera. THE SPICE MUST FLOW!

There’s a boat upon the River Cam that’s calling my name, but I am bound by chains of academe and dare not to it answer.

Day 20 - MYTH Inc One of my first if not THE first encounter I had with humourous fantasy. My great-uncle had a couple audiobooks in the series and I actually heard these books before reading them. Plus, the series art intro’d me to the Foglio’s work!

A French tourist who looks to be about 60 just popped a wheelie on a rental bike as he pedalled along Southbank. I FUCKING LOVE LONDON

To avoid the inevitable conversation of ‘Is that really your name?’ when ordering food/drinks my high school self usually just used the name Bjorn. It was literally easier, plus humourous. Yes, Bjorn was more believable.

Day 19 - Magic’s Pawn This one is problematic. Pro: Gay story! Con: TRAGIC Gay story, PLUS Creepy Rape. Vanyel was LITERALLY the first gay character in fiction I had ever heard of (early internet chat room). It was huge for that time...but toxic narratives

Which fantasy books do you think have the best character development? Debates on how necessary char dev is to a good story aside. I was reading an article on Zelazny’s Amber this morning, praising the char dev in the first five. How much does first person help, I wonder?

Day 18 - Tom Swift Boy Genius! Almost-Mad Science! I loved these books, and Tom Swift made me look forward to science class, though I was always disappointed at how far we were from the awesome things in the books. It def contributed to my mad penchants!
