“In Buddhist exceptionalism, we see statements like, ‘Buddhism isn’t a faith-based religion.’ . . . [But] trust or confidence in the Buddha is a matter of faith.” ––
Scholar Evan Thompson discusses his new book and the problems with Buddhist modernism.

There are of course, though, meaningful distinctions to be made between faith as a type of "blind belief" and faith as an open-heartedness that is understood to be balanced by an embrace also with an "investigative" wisdom (in Theravada) and even a "great doubt" (Hakuin's Zen).

My problem isn’t “Buddhist” or “Not Buddhist” —but that we commercialize and promote ourselves as experts on and within both sides. What do we really know?

Where are our priorities? Western Buddhist practice? Or personal ambition and “editor” “publisher” exceptionalism. Is it religion or science that has the “exceptional power-fame issue” or ourselves?

We value “Buddhist” magazine editors and “publishers” at $100,000 per year. What value do we offer Drupkang retreatants or ordained sangha? I find the exceptional problem arises in science and Buddhism when disciplines are simply used to sell ourselves.

While we are reflecting on exceptionalism — who are the Ho-s?
