We have a front-line response to the current crisis through , which typically handles 2/3 of all online SNAP apps in CA (1/4 of total apps). We've seen a 286% increase in volume from March 11 to 18. SNAP enrollment must be streamlined now.

Federal response should not wait for states to apply for waivers. Online SNAP enrollment can be simpler. Additional hurdles + burdens add insult to injury. Remove interviews. Remove additional verifications. An applicants signature can attest to their truth. Trust people in need.

SNAP is a powerful tool for economic crisis. It can be even better. Get newly-eligible people on quickly & ensure current clients stay on. Once people are on SNAP, we can get relief to them quickly! Increase food benefits. Allow online purchase + delivery. Give cash via EBT too.

is needed for response. We can get thru the crisis and have a better, more resilient social safety net now and in the future. The holes in our safety net can be patched thru service + policy + tech delivery. Ask people what they need and deliver.

No, real time state data is rare. This isn’t state data- this is data we produce from . We provide digital application & outreach assistance as a service in partnership with the state & counties.

I also spent part of my day coding (tagging with themes) comments from yesterday's GetCalFresh applications. The stories are heartbreaking and a reminder how vulnerable most (if not all) of us are at this time.

Masses of the permanently jobless don't qualify for any sort of aid. Maybe throw some bread slices out for them?
