This happens a lot. And then we usually tear them down and build up someone new who we think is purer.

Would I go to a speaking event with those two? No. But I'm not going to police someone who does. We all have our motivations.

I have heard the arguments but maybe we shouldn't be ascribing so much power to individual events. Will anyone remember this event happened in 6 months? No. The two conservative trans women dont need Contra for legitimacy, have you seen the number of followers they have?

They're going to say their bullshit and people are going to listen whether contra is in the room or not. But that's besides my point. I'm not here to defend contra.

I'd like to talk about how we build up freshly out white lefty trans women into almost mythical status and then tear them apart the second they step out of line.

I realize I've been a massive beneficiary of this dynamic myself, let me just state that upfront.

But I feel a lot of pressure to "represent" the trans community and suddenly, because I have a platform, I'm no longer allowed to express my own views but I must represent the whole community.

I'm going to eventually do or say something that gets me the contra treatment from everybody and there's nothing I can do to stop it. I almost admire contra for getting it out of the way so early on.

But why do our online spaces as a community have to be like this?

I'm not saying we need to excuse genuine abuse or anything. That should always be called out.

It's just a speaking engagement. Maybe she's trying to build up a speaking career. It can be very lucrative in the long run. If that's the case, I can see how the Vancouver event would fit in to that sort of plan, long term.

I mean I accepted a speaking gig at the women's march despite the fact that tons of trans women felt alienated by the actual march in January.

I guess I want more balance between accountability and cutting a little bit of slack for those who were building up as perfect representatives of our community.

Thank you for the feedback, I'm listening and am already reconsidering my position on the contra mess

But I maintain my criticism of the way we build up white, newly out, usually young trans women before tearing her down and starting on someone new.

It’s a risk she’s taking that may potentially alienate some of the purists in her circle of support, but I’d argue some of her characters would already have done that.

Why have we propped her up in the first place?

Because she’s smart and she has a way of breaking down how ridiculous white nationalism sounds when you take away all the trendy bullshit that goes along with it.

What does that have to do with the trans community or our issues?

I misunderstood. I don’t know why she’d be held up as a model for the trans community. As far as I can tell, she never asked for that.
