Congress should stay in session until the American people get the relief bill they need. Retweet if you agree.

All I can say to this is that it sounds like you're reading a lot of fun science fiction, but you might want to supplement that by reading more science, too.

Trump has done a huge amount of golfing and achieved almost nothing. What deals he cuts benefit himself, his family, and his friends, but not the countryβ€”and there’s no transparency. This is not the way you run any government, let alone the US federal gov. In other words…

Also, cryogenics really is just science fiction. Just because they do it in the movies doesn’t mean it will ever happen.

What I’m reading suggests there isn’t a viable fusion drive concept capable of what you suggest. What design are you using, or are you just assuming it will be possible to create such a drive?

That capability is a long, long way into the future.

Assume they finally achieve viability. We are still likely > a century away from being able to launch something so staggeringly large and complex into space or to launch its components and assemble them there. The same or longer for collecting sufficient hydrogen from Jupiter.

I read this and the linked article about the type of fusion drive to be used: an inertial confinement fusion reactor. After 4 decades of testing, they still haven’t been able to show viability or achieve ignition in the largest experimental facility. The design isn’t viable.

I’m not saying β€œnever.” But it would be grossly dishonest to pretend that interstellar travel is around the corner. It’s not.

I would love to see a breakdown of your numbers, how you got them. That 500 Gt ship would require 1.67 x 10^18 J just to launch into orbit. How many years to make it to the first star? How are you keeping the crew alive that long, in all the radiation of space?

In fact, we have lots of science that tells us those things shouldn’t be possibleβ€”and it’s some of the most reliably verified science we have (relativity, thermodynamics, etc.). So this isn’t just an engineering problem…it’s a fundamental issue of physics.

The science behind cell phones and touch screens was already understood when Star Trek ran. The engineering breakthroughs (miniaturization, chip capacity, etc.) just hadn’t been achieved. We have no science for faster-than-light travel or violating the conservation of energy.

They aren’t around the corner. Nothing we know about physics today confirms that such things will ever be possible. We can’t start engineering technology when there’s no science on which to base it. So far, this is all science fiction and speculation. We aren’t remotely close.
