I think the difference is that Rails in 2004 was solving a programmer happiness/productivity problem, not a (premature) scale problem. Any tech decision based on ‘one day this will be massive’ is likely to be bad - Rails did the opposite.

I always loved ’s RNN to autocomplete sentences from a corpus of, say, sci-fi:

We’re expanding everyone’s network storage from 5MB to 100MB! 20x more space! As part of this the J:\ drive will only be accessible through the VPN Portal. See Tom Armitage if you need to upgrade your Surface Book Midi for VPN access. But hurry, Tom can only do 35 upgrades a day.

thanks! that looks great, but would love to avoid a recurring charge at the moment - literally just want to put some highlights and notes on an audio file, nothing smarter yet!

User researchers: I've got a bunch of audio recordings of sessions I want to annotate, highlight, and share with colleagues. We're an impoverished startup. What should I be using?

I genuinely love the moments when the facade of BIG SERIOUS INFRASTRUCTURE falls away to reveal a bunch of normal people just trying to get their job done and go home on time.

The later 64-bit supporting drivers only support newer models of scanner. 🤷‍♂️

Stupid that my perfectly good scanner won't work under MacOS Catalina. dropped 32-bit support and Fuji won't update the drivers. Maybe you can both get together and work out whose carbon budget to file this under?
