Do you want to be a business-person? Not everyone does. In that case, freelancing probably isn't for you. You'll spend less time using your core skill & more time marketing, negotiating & managing projects. Going freelance = turning yourself into a business. Be ready for that.

If you're consistently turning down freelance work for capacity reasons, you're undercharging.

When you book a call with someone, dial in at the arranged time. When meetings are held, show up & be present. When asking someone to quote on a project, reply to their offer. Whether moving forward or not. Common courtesy goes a long way in a world where it’s often forgone.

Freelancers often undervalue people skills. Sure, we sit alone while working most of the time, but that doesn't mean you can't be personable. You can still let your personality shine through using computer-mediated communication. Being likeable is so important.

People will say that reliability, efficiency and proactivity should come as standard; freelancing is a service industry. I'd agree, but you'd be surprised how many freelancers don't put emphasis on excelling at these things. Supplement your core skills to truly stand out.

Friday is the day I hold back solely for my own business’ development. No interruptions. I’ll usually write, learn something new, talk to people or work on my website. Get to a position where you can facilitate something like this. Why?

As a freelancer, I'm a big believer that all your calls should be pre-scheduled. Taking a fifteen-minute-long unsolicited call could throw you off by triple that time at least. Arranging calls in slots to suit your day's schedule, with pre-defined agendas, makes way more sense.

Freelancers! Especially those that work from home. You’ll often find people in life who struggle to understand the constraints on your time. Set clear boundaries to help them. For example 👇
