Well. You have to gather data. Have you tried not pushing yourself so hard? Does it work? I know my answer. You should go find yours.

It's not like I can take any particular credit for it, but it does still give me the warm&fuzzies that we don't completely suck.

I know, right? Are we still doing phrasing?

Anyway, that's the last time I worked late when I wasn't fit to do so. Sleep matters. Amazing things happen there. Get some rest.

At about midday all the other coders walked in - still total zombies. "Good morning. Found the bug." said I with a grin so wide the top of my head could have fallen off. There's nowt so smug as folks.

Emails from the others at about 6 or 7am saying "we're all dead, pubs are going to kill us, company's dead." I sat down, and in 30 minutes I had confirmed the bug and fixed it, made a build, sent it to the pubs.

I figured out the details of the bug. How to prove that was the actual bug - how to reproduce it properly. And then how to fix it - once and for all. I arrived in the office about 11am - totally empty.

I didn't so much sleep that night as I just passed out. But I did sleep. And the next morning I woke up at 10am. And I *knew*. I KNEW. That was totally it. That was the bug. I didn't have office email at home, so while I drove in, I thought.

I couldn't see straight. I stood up, said something like "fuck all of you, I need some sleep". The replies were along the lines of "fuck you you fucking splitter fuck." I drove home seriously depressed - I had abandoned everybody.

Every coder in the building (7 of us I think?) was heads down trying to find it. Because we were already late with a publisher milestone, so this was SERIOUS MONEY. It was 3am or something. For the third night. I was fucked.

I'm going to tell my favourite coding story. And you can't stop me. We were several days over a publisher milestone. And there was an intermittent bug. Common enough to cause crashes, not common enough to be findable.

That's why the UK is great. It's been ruled by every sort of scumbag imaginable for so many centuries. They've had a bit of time to figure out the mitigation strategies. It's not perfect, but it's not ACTUALLY had a civil war in 300 years, which is probably some sort of record.

We got a special waiver from Sega for being a single-player game. Meaning we could just put up "Press any button. On any controller. Any of them. We're not fussy. Show us you're alive. Please. Anybody. Don't make me call 911."

Look at the GOP right now. If they could make Donny vanish and Pence materialize in his place, you absolutely 100% bet they would do it in a heartbeat. Pence is absolute scum, but he knows how to politics, and he wouldn't drag them all down with him.

It's absolutely exemplified by the UK right now. May was replaced by Johnson without ANY POSSIBLE HINT that Corbyn has any merit whatsoever. Which is good, because according to the general election result, 124% of the population of the UK hated Corbyn.

My argument for PM vs Pres isn't high and mighty. It's really simple. A party can replace a shit PM without admitting that the other side are right. But you cannot replace a shit Pres without having a big old barney about who is right and who is wrong.

SCHIFF: "If right doesn't matter, we're lost ...here, right is supposed to matter. It's what's made us the greatest nation on earth. No constitution can protect us if right doesn't matter anymore ...this is why if you find him guilty, you must remove him. Because right matters."

Yeah but what if the President declared Trump Tower to be a Federal prison? Point to me where in the Constitution it says a President can't get re-elected from a penthouse prison cell. What if he wears an ankle bracelet? Then it's totally legal, right?

Yup - it's bullshit. It's like this mutual suicide pact between compilers and coders that as long as nobody looks directly into the UB, nobody gets hurt. We just share ghost stories about it to scare us both.

Can you examine an option that simply doesn't have a president? Have a prime minister instead that the party can choose (and replace) when needed? It just seems to work a lot better without a frikkin president.
