Feb.3rd is the last day of winter in lunar calendar and Bean Throwing Day. We throw roasted soy beans out of doors to drive out demons and throw them to invite good luck. Shrines hold Setsubun fests and lucky beans are thrown to the visitors. Pix at Kanda-Myojin Shrine near Akiba

Bura Tamori is a weekly geological TV series broadcast on NHK and the theme of last night was the Shimanto River in western Kochi Prefecture. I've been there twice because my eldest son lives near this "the last clear stream of Japan".

Close to Tottori Sand Dunes is Uradome Coast . It is a beautiful scenic coastal inlet along the Japan Sea in Tottori Prefecture . The rocky coastline was created from marine erosion.

In one corner of the Tottori Sand Dunes is the world's first sand museum dedicated to exhibiting sculptures made of sand. The basic concept of the Sand Museum is "World Tour on Sand", with their theme changing every year. This year's theme is "South Asia".

The last destination of our trip in Tottori and Shimane Prefecture in December last year was Tottori Sand Dunes. They form the only large dune system in Japan and are really an unusual sight to see in this country with all its lovely gardens and greenery, but there they are.
