When I learned Latin, the teachers made it very clear that there is no standard Latin but varieties, and they showed us how they evolved and how their more formal variants were negotiated and contested. My first exposure to typology and lang evolution at age 11. Not bad.

I think it's perhaps not so much a statement about Latin per se but about how Latin in taught. I learned Latin first and it's one reason for why I'm a linguist today.

Google ngrams says that "there IS a range" is 2.5 more frequent and that "there ARE a range" is used only since the 1970ies. books.google.com/ngrams/graph?c…

Q for language acquisition experts: After learning a bunch of nouns, my 18m-old is suddenly super excited about prepositions (no other categories yet). Didn't see this coming. Is there a standard trajectory for word-categories? Or is this language-specific?

In psycholinguistics a lot of confusion arises from the failure to distinguish between theories and models. They are not the same and these terms should not be used interchangeably. Thank you.
