e-mail from university admin just made me aware of something I’d not even considered up till now: if we go to all on-line instruction, all our int’l students on F-1 visas will technically be in violation of their visa terms

Since way more people than I expected are reading this, here’s the actual letter our uni president wrote to DHS on the matter <>

The course wasn’t designed to be an online course and I’d guess in admin terms is coded differently, and codes are what the govt relies on to know who’s doing what, so I don’t think this will be a huge issue? Idk maybe in the US it’s different

I think ultimately, we just don’t want to expose our students to the vagaries of “surely the immigration officials will use the most charitable and common-sense interpretation of the regulations rather than looking for an opening to deport nonresident aliens”

They're still registered for classroom courses; the online component is supplemental material and instruction. 😉

I had a flatmate a few years back who was an F1 student enrolled in an evening course in a univ in philly with half the classes online. I actually had asked him to check with the univ whether it's allowed. They gave him exactly the answer you provided above.

for logical reasons, you can’t get a student visa to do an on-line degree—you could do that from your home country, so that’s not justification for a visa—so the rules apparently require you to attend classes in person to keep in good standing with immigration
