I slogged through a SQL book and it was awful, then played around with scraping Fantasy FB data and practicing some queries on that. Short, project-based learning is so much more rewarding and engaging for me. Ergo - !

The overkill in "experience" that most applicants will need is very real, and sure someone who has worked with tidyverse/pandas could pick up core SQL skills quickly, but it's all about getting hired and interviewing well first.
