7/But now we know geothermal can become much more cost competitive. We have at least 100+ GW of dispatchable, zero-GHG generation that can help decarbonize the last 20% of the electric sector at an attractive price. It’s time to get to work. END

6/Why does this matter? Grid modellers, researchers, policy makers making decisions use this data to prioritize technologies. The false perception that geothermal would always be expensive was part of why it was left out of the recent ITC extension.

5/For more on how and why subsurface industries’ costs can improve dramatically and rapidly, and what it means for geothermal economics, check out my paper here.

4/Previously cost improvement scenarios were modest, even though we know subsurface industries can improve rapidly and dramatically. Take a benchmark from shale O&G, for example. The Appalachia region has increased productivity by 10X in just the last decade.

3/This is a major improvement on the previous ATB, which only included a cursory improved technology case, rather than one backed up by trends in R&D and the marketplace. See the 2017 geothermal version below.

1/NREL recently released the 2019 Annual Technology Baseline, and the update *finally* includes a realistic cost improvement scenario for geothermal. This somewhat minor change is actually a HUGE deal, so a short THREAD.

2/NREL was able to build off the recently released GeoVision study to show scenarios where hydrothermal and EGS costs fall into the $50-70/MWh range. This means we can get a MASSIVE supply of dispatchable, zero-GHG power by 2030 at an attractive cost.
