NYT describes left as demanding “ideological purity” and “centrists” like Klobuchar as providing a “reality check.” This is lazy and wrong: everyone has an ideology, including “centrists” regardless of how fervently they try to obscure it w non-stop apologias for “pragmatism.”

I don't know that Marx wrote anything so resonant today as The Eighteenth Brumaire. This week's is an interview with sociologist and editorial committee member Dylan Riley on that text and what we might learn from it today

So awkward when official denial of Holocaust complicity gets in the way of Bibi forming a global alliance of reaction!

Interesting after listening to this discussion between and to wonder about, as social conservatives contemplate a break with plutocrats, how they will explain the situation we're in/what the GOP needs to do for their declassé base.

Listened to this episode of The Dig again and was compelled to share. It is a terrific discussion of the Dem2020 primary field with Brianna Grey Joy, Waleed Shahid and Dave Weigel and I cannot recommend it enough.

The U.S. did not have a “sane immigration policy” on the eve of World War II, unless Klobuchar believes that formal racism is “sane policy”: at the time, the US excluded Asians almost entirely and sharply restricted entry by *everyone* outside of Northern and Western Europe.

After presidents waging global warfare without congressional authorization it shouldn’t surprise that Trump got the idea that he could reallocate a few billion dollars without congressional authorization. The imperial state has long since come home to roost in the garrison state.

There are no stupid questions in this conversation (no promises re: stupid answers). If you aren't familiar with The Dig, I highly recommend changing that. It features fewer jokes about hentai than other leftwing pods, but is quite excellent nonetheless.

What is pragmatic case for Democrats voluntarily providing Trump with $1.375 billion for his Wall if he wasn’t going to do a second shutdown and was just going to declare an emergency anyway? Stop feeding the beast. Not a dollar more for “border security.” Demilitarization now.
