overall roam is powerful for capturing this sort of branching stuff but it’s still possible to get overwhelmed as putting down the branching stuff prompts more (a sort of mental malthusianism)

I have gotten somewhat better at just tossing things into a “Books to Read” page on Roam, and I can easily keep track of whether someone recommended/why

in a sense, natural selection is just the process of separating goodhart from actual optimization

wasn't me- that said most of the examples of goodhart's law over time in biology should be long extinct with no trace since they were selected against

the typical masks that you get at the doctor's office are only useful for stopping you from getting other people sick. N95 masks are what doctors/nurses where when interacting with patients with TB, and actually filter out viral particles when worn with a proper seal

yes, Kuhn has been near the top of my reading stack for years now, maybe this will push it over the top

Incidentally everyone focuses on the “revolution” part of Kuhn but afaict his account of normal science is much more important and seems to fit history better

Nice hearing various arguments that I’ve heard piecemeal in different places put into historical context (Goodman’s grue/bleen problem, Hempel’s ravens, limits of falsificationism, normal science vs crisis vs revolution, etc)

listening to “Theory and Reality” on @Meaningness’s recommendation and now of course I need to read Kuhn and Godfrey-Smith’s book on Philosophy of Biology
