14. Developing sustainable solutions to meet rural housing need. This should be focused on small-scale developments that fit local communities. For example, 10 houses per village would help solve the housing crisis.

13. Creating more good work in rural areas. Our research found most young people in the countryside wanted to work there. They particularly wanted to work on protecting nature & tackling climate change. We need to make this possible.

“UK has third cheapest basket of food in the developed world, but also has the highest food poverty in Europe in terms of people being able to afford a healthy diet. Type 2 diabetes, a diet-related illness, costs the UK £27bn a year"

11. What is land for? England needs a ‘land use framework’ - a strategy to guide the use of land, & get away from the over-simplified use the land vs. spare the land debate. This would be run by an independent public body.

10. Establishing a ‘National Agroecology Development Bank’ to accelerate a fair & sustainable transition. To finance projects to radically change the way we use land and grow food, we propose a specialised development bank.

9. Boosting cooperation & collaboration by extending support for Producer Organisations to all sectors - the UK government has a scheme for helping fruit & vegetable producers to work together. They should extend, with funding, this idea to all farming sectors.

8. Making sure every farmer can get trusted, independent advice by training a cadre of peer mentors and farmer support networks. Farming can be a lonely business. We need to encourage ways for farmers to learn from & support each other.

7. Backing innovation by farmers. Big, centralised agricultural research hasn’t delivered innovation in farming. We need to target research grants to farmer-led projects.

6. Designing a ten-year transition plan for sustainable farming by 2030. Our research found farmers typically plan 5 years ahead. To make big changes, they need stable government policy, for example on payments & pesticide rules.
