The alternative is a system where all legislation is made by a handful of powerful states. US is a republic of states - each of which have input into national policy. Popular vote counts in each state.

Why do people keep talking about democracy? the US is a federal republic, not a democracy. People vote for state leaders. States are then represented equally. It’s a system that protects weaker states against powerful states. Popular vote would centralise power in NY and LA

In the US people value freedom over safety. In Europe/Australia people value safety over freedom. I think it’s got more to do with national psychology, than leadership. Do you really think even Obama could have convinced all Americans to wear masks?

The key word here is ‘scared’. Its right to be concerned about the virus - but the absolute terror some people have is not healthy. It’s easy to manipulate frightened people and plenty of people in the media and politics were quite happy to play up the fear.

“Don’t let it dominate you” is basically cognitive behavioural therapy. It’s quite a clever strategy that will appeal to people who are tired of being afraid. Not a big fan of Russell brand, but that was an interesting analysis.

With the ⁦⁩ still in stage 4 lockdown and Daniel Andrews refusing to listen to the local community, it’s an appropriate time to repost my op ed from July on the rural nature of the Peninsula.

This would actually humanise both Trump and Biden and put a nail in the coffin of conventional media.
