Thread: This is truly staggering. There was a time when people imagined Xiaomi being worth $100 billion. Xiaomi is now at a record low $27.9 billion market cap

Just 18 months ago people (read bankers) were talking up a great story about Xiaomi's unique internet model making it worth $100 billion. Among the reasons were bankers' projections that earnings would double to $2 billion in 2018 (operating was $198m)

Don't despair Xiaomi shareholders, all you need is for some public-spirited activist investor to force a way onto their board and put forward a vote on a new strategy

If that doesn't work then there must be tons of upset shareholders, maybe you can seek redress through a class-action lawsuit

Bankers aren't the only one who had their heads in the clouds. For some reason, 25 of the 34 sell-side analysts tracked by Bloomberg recommend investors Buy the stock. Only 2 say sell. This chart tracks those recommendations red: sell. yellow: hold. green:buy

And if that fails maybe you can take your grievances to the local government, who I'm sure will give you a fair hearing. Where are they based again?

As a result of this massive plunge since its IPO, even later-round VCs are losing money. If you bought in during Series F (Dec 2014 to Aug 2017), you've lost ~35-43% of that money. And don't expect a dividend anytime soon.

We were all looking for disruption by technology. But the reverse transpired. Technology got disrupted. (The old guard is so good at defending its ground).
