I don't want allies. I need accomplices. I need people willing to ride with me when it gets rough the way I will for them. I don't want people 'supporting' from ivory towers.

I wish tech conferences would stop holding events in states where somebody would be surprised there’s anybody other than white people lol

I hear it’s great if you’re into climbing? But I feel you. I couldn’t in good faith recommend a space that white to my friends.

No joke lol. I watched a white man at the conference dap up the one black man in the room and then say “Good to see you brother” and I was like. Oh no. No no no.

Someone once tweeted that she thought she didn't want to be a parent, but she realized she actually didn't want to be a mother. I feel the same way. If I could be a dad, maybe I'd consider having kids.

I’m personally not cool with helping build a community that doesn’t look like the world around me. I’m not saying I know how to build an inviting community. But I am pretty confident it can’t be done by white people alone. Bring others to the table.

It’s not my place to speak much further on the subject so I’ll leave it here: If I, a white-bread cis straight woman, felt out-of-place at the conference, you can imagine how other non-white men felt.

My point is that white spaces are not inviting spaces for black and brown people. No matter how friendly individual members are. Plenty of people on here have explained why being the first or the only in the room usually isn’t worth it.

Despite the organizers’ good intentions and efforts, and the warmth of individual attendees, it’s still relevant to discuss that the conference was a white space. And I mean, WHITE white. A whole lotta men too. Maybe because it was in Utah? The “why” isn’t relevant to my point.

I have to give props to the organizers for live streaming the talks and raising over $7k for Black Girls Code. Their efforts to make the event accessible and inviting demonstrate they understand it’s important to extend community-building beyond two days in a hotel ballroom

This is part of what felt weird about being at React Rally. The crowd there didn’t look like the team I work with every day, nor did it represent the broader community of React developers I see around me in New York
