Got to give props to the thermals on these old machines, meanwhile the mini is quite toasty.

This is so weird, what bean counter decided to ship this machine with 3 out of the 4 DIMMs filled?

I’m going to retract calling the Trashcan an awful machine (though its an awful Mac Pro). If you can get one for < $1k then upgrading it is cheap enough to make it a decent machine.

These D GPUs are weird. In the various Geekbench tests the 300 and 500 are basically equal, 700 is 30-40% faster. Doesn’t make sense until you look at the D500 clock speeds.

Whoever assembled this must’ve been getting kickbacks from Loctite.

A bit nerve wracking in a couple of places but not too bad.

I’m going to say those are pretty respectable numbers. The Mac Mini has a lot higher single core score, but loses by about the same margin multi core.

Performance wise the 12 Core 2013 Pro and i7 2018 Mini feel pretty identical in all the tasks I’ve thrown at it. The noticeable diff is any heavy task pegs the mini’s fan @ 4400 RPM (max) with the cores at 90°+. The Pro never goes above mid 70s and fan speed is <= 800 (min).

Only thing I need now is a good Thunderbolt 2 10G NIC. I have an Akitio but its buggy in 10.15, guessing the Sonnet Solo is the way to go. Just don’t want to spend $200 on it…

Props to Akitio for supporting older hardware.

You’re not making my decision between a 2018 Mini and a 2013 Pro any easier…

I honestly can’t say which is better, for the same price/config probably the mini, but Pro is quite a bit cheaper if you get a good deal.

So worth it for sub $1K?

Sure, < $1k + ~400 for various upgrades to max it out and you are still ahead of any similarly configured mini. But the mini isn’t a bad machine either and has its own benefits.

The only time I ever hear the Mac Pro fan is when the GPUs get into the mix.

I don’t really do anything GPU related, but even with the Pros fan maxed out its not very loud.
