Mac is a great public speaker—always fresh, always thoughtful. Tonight he reminisces on the Black community he found in the NE Going neighborhood, when he first moved to Portland in the 90s. Much if not all of that neighborhood is now gentrified.

It’s always been really heartening how many BLM assemblies work to feed anyone who may be hungry. This assembly has Atlas Pizza, vegan / vegetarian sandwiches, bean burritos wrapped in tin foil, vegan split pea soup, and vegan orzo salad—all for free.

Volunteers try to give me so much food when I’m asking what’s available. “Please, we have so much,” they say. They’re a decentralized organization of volunteers, but they’ll use venmo donations to @ pdxra for expenses.

There’s also a separate table handing out personal bottles of sanitizer, hand warmers, ponchos, and other cold weather protective gear. It’s not raining right now but the sky occasionally showers on the crowd, and there will be more rain before the night is done.pic.twitter.com/yDI7jVEb3L

I’m bizarrely getting text messages from Elizabeth Warren democrats, asking if I can make last minute phone bank calls to states whose polls haven’t closed. If anyone would take on this last minute challenge, it’s Liz’s people.

A handful of marchers with bullhorns are running up to houses and encouraging residents to join the march. “I have to go to school tomorrow!” one shouts, when someone presumably says they can’t join because of a commitment tomorrow.

After marching through the SE Belmont business hub around SE 34th, the assembly seems about to pass SE 39th. After much speculation that this group was headed downtown, it certainly seems like they either aren’t going there tonight or they won’t be there for quite a while.
