In the podcast I also talk about one of my favorite books by Jon Franklin, Not Quite a Miracle. He also won a Pulitzer for his work on a peace called Mrs. Kelly’s Monster. Tagged to this thread. It’s a quick read. I highly recommend it!

Tryna start a thing. Academics, what are your other passions besides your research? Mine are dancing, singing, and cooking.

As we are approaching a new academic year, incoming grad students are asking about identifying a mentor. What are qualities of a good mentor? What questions should students ask to evaluate mentor fit?

Unfortunately, it seems that efforts at my uni are predominantly from the students. There are some university-wide initiatives through the student clinic & counseling center, as well, but not necessarily geared toward grad school.

No current programs here. BUT exciting news... Myself, along with some other students, are in the process of developing a monthly workshop where we tackle different aspects of wellness/mental health/self-care in grad school. Will keep the Twitterverse updated 😌

People often ask me how I have gotten so comfortable at giving talks/public speaking. A) I’m not. I’m super freaked out on the inside. I’ve just learned how to hide it. B) I try to treat it like a conversation, instead of a monologue. C) Lots and lots of practice & panic attacks
