CNET doesn’t run guest posts, but I still get several requests a month to publish them. I’d say half are from people who want direct free publicity, but half are attempts to get SEO (search engine optimization) mojo from inbound links to their websites. All of them are annoying.

I get them fairly regularly too--for my personal website--which I don't really understand. You're probably right about the SEO/inbound links and it's probably mostly people who are shotgunning to every site under the sun.

SEO is a huge incentive for publicity. Many, many times PR people ask me ahead of time “And you’ll link to our website, right?”

I definitely get the annoyance factor though. On the one hand, I'd really rather not engage with these people. OTOH, I feel very very slightly bad about ghosting the few people who may be confused that writing something for a random blog actually constitutes good exposure.
