The Internet and the Third Estate
stratechery.com/2019/the-inter…
Mark Zuckerberg suggested that social media is a "Fifth Estate"; in fact, social media is a means by which the Third Estate — commoners — can seize political power. Here history matters.

The public voice will get very interesting when large countries experience a deep recession. Most of our current discourse has evolved ina period of economic growth. The anger and mob rule of social media will truly be seen when people start losing their jobs en mass.

I'm curious as to whether you think TV networks should adopt the same policy towards political ads as Facebook? The argument in favor of Facebook here seems to rest on its power... but I don't think it's a given that Facebook has more power over political discourse than TV.

How much ad spend and/or how many dummy accounts do you suppose would be required to nullify a million ‘commoners’ on social media?

Nailed it at the end:
"The fact of the matter is that the world is fundamentally changing, just as it did five hundred years ago. At the same time, that change will take time". (and to start implementing the correct plans for this change).

If there is a Fifth Estate, it’s Facebook itself as a singular owner of personal and aggregated data and an algo for global perception.
