1/ A footnote on and tablets: the iPad alone brought in nearly $6 billion in the holiday quarter, and unit sales were up very slightly at over 13 million. Most companies would kill for a single product with those kinds of numbers, even if they’re well down from the peak.

Also, worldwide 2017 there were perhaps 100 million consumer laptops sold. iPads selling at ~half that puts the number in context, especially considering the price, durability, and lifespan of an iPad compared to PC laptop.

I am guessing that the # of iPads sold in the consumer segment in the US is => consumer PCs

Wife is using her iPad 2 still. Works great! Computing is magic in this day and age!

I’m now hearing more and more from my non-techie friends who are looking for a new laptop that they really just want to get an iPad Pro with a keyboard. We keep talking about “work”, but for 95% of people this computer is more than enough for them.

Planning on replacing my 7 year old laptop with an iPad pro soon..... Apart from the fiddly'ness of the odd excel sheet or diagram at home can't think of a reason not to.

It is not "adequate" but for what people do with computers these days it is superior.

I bought an iPad pro with keyboard to try to supplant most of what I do with a laptop. I found it grossly inadequate for even light day to day work (IT Pro). Sold it a few months after. Even with iOS 11, still excels most as consumption device.

On iPads lasting longer than PCs - is this for the same selling price? Surely higher priced laptops can feasibly last longer with both updates and speed that doesn't make you pull your hair out. A Core 2 Duo laptop from 2009 runs win10 fine, an iPad 2 is a hair puller by now.

Clearly you didn't let it update the OS. My iPad 2 became unusable after an update and couldn't restore previous OS. It's now a nice piece of glass sitting in the drawer. 😢

It’s on the last one it could get. My Air is on 11 and pretty slow tho.

Did you try wiping/erasing (a full reset) and setting it up as a new iPad? Something may have gotten corrupted with the update because there are millions of others that are still working OK.

Yeah should give that a shot. Thanks for the reminder

So I wiped & did the full reset thing. iPad 2 is now usable. Still slow, but usable. So I can use it for reading and watching the odd vid. Many web pages load fine but some reset constantly. Oh well! Thanks for the tip.
