If Twitter assigns blue checks, why has no one created a graphic for red checks?

I'm not against psychometric research. In fact, I'm somewhat fond of the Five-Factor Model. So, yes, I can imagine valuable work being done with this starting point, but it must have more depth than reporting correlations among simple measurements.

Constantly thinking how this post broke down Lovecraftian storytelling to the bare minimun AND STILL delivered the same feeling.

Digital quarantine is here. It appears that folks who fled Wuhan have been digitally quarantined, likely via WeChat. Their apps don’t work outside the quarantine zone. Now that’s happened to 240 Uber users in Mexico exposed to the infected. Complex issue! A thread…🧵

First, Wuhan is a city in crisis. The healthcare system has crashed. You do not want that in your city, or country. This is not an illusory threat. So, a quarantine. Stop this from spreading. Free movement suddenly has externalities. But how efficient should that quarantine be?

"With no rent controls and fewer restrictions on height and density, Tokyo appears to be a city where the market is under control—where supply is keeping home prices from rising as drastically as they have in many other major world cities."

They certainly try to associate degree of happiness with various activities, events, or conditions of life. My complaint is that this is all too superficial. The causally relevant factors are deeper and not amenable to surveys.

Is there anything more worthless than social science studies of "happiness" based on surveys, which are then naively cited as evidence ("studies show ...")? The surveys are little more than mood polls. They are not structured to elicit causal factors that operate over time.

"Never use Free Monads. They are slow. They produce boilerplate. They require functors. Functors can’t be composed. They require interpreters. Interpreters can’t be composed. So FMs can’t be composed." These statements are all wrong or completely misleading. 1/

The coronavirus is driving wartime levels of medical innovation in China. Telemedicine, medical delivery robots, at-home diagnosis via drone — all these things existed to some extent but they will become standard of care.

Patronage isn't more common than in the 1980s, but it is more important to intellectual and economic productivity. Governments, top universities and companies overlook talent and opportunities they would have once seen. Decaying institutions leave low hanging fruit unplucked.
