Yes! That is pure tragedy porn too. To roughly quote a review I read: “about as interesting as a laundry list, but not as well punctuated.” It makes only the most banal of points. Read Death of Grass by John Christopher instead for a more morally poignant apocalypse story.

Finally someone agrees with me! I’ve watched the film twice (haven’t read the book yet but was aware of the fundamental change) and this is still exactly my impression of it. It has been gutted of any interesting points that could have been made.

I’m not certain that Brussels and key EU capitals fully see the strategic significance of Ericsson and Nokia in this time of geotechnological competition. They sometimes look stuck in the steel age.

twitter, does anyone have a favorite strategy for teaching thermodynamics? I feel like a majority of the time we either look up a bunch of constants in a table or slog through tedious algebra (I guess twitter could weigh in too)

Here is a short and very accessible explanation of what an exciting-polariton is. Because of the matter-light hybrid nature, they both interact non-negligibly and have very small effective mass. Polariton condensates have some very interesting and unintuitive properties.

This is the most important and devastating thing to read today. It is well worth reading through, but you will need a box of tissues and/or some you love to hug tightly. TW: Mental health, suicide

So sorry for your loss! I cannot even begin to imagine what that is like, but no one should have to go through what you and your family have. 💔 And thanks for writing this thread! I am sure it will many of us at least try to understand a little better.

I really liked the Farseer trilogy when I read it many years ago, but wasn't moved at all by The Liveship Traders (which everyone else seems to love). Maybe I should give Hobb another try with some of her other books some time.

That's the thing. I don't want to put myself out there as a reviewer in that way and I also don't want to put the authors out there. It is one thing to publish preprints and revised versions as we all do. It is another to make public the discussion with the referees.

That isn’t to say there aren’t problems with the current system, some of which public peer review might (partially) address, but I think the cure might be worse than the disease in this case.

I am open to changing my mind about it, but I don’t think making peer review public is a good idea. This thread nicely spells out why.

> So: 1. Very small sample (N=23). Any single data point will show up. Uncertainties would be large. Control for confounding variables impossible. 2. Look at Fig. 18. Each dot is one person. There are no dots corresponding to most tail bumps. Likely artefact of illustration?
