From a practical standpoint a lot depends on your personal comfort levels and (sadly) whether you have political or academic ambitions. If not, you should continue doing what you do - intriguing us and pushing the boundaries of discourse on this platform 🙏

If it ever happens I do worry that corporations would be incentivised to develop enormously addictive new substances, just as the food industry has created very unhealthy but irresistible junk food

How decriminalisation can be achieved is an interesting question. The vast criminal justice edifice that was created to fight this war will no doubt defend itself tooth and nail

Yes. Leaving aside issues of personal liberty and the destructive effect on (especially black) communities in the US, the drug trade is thriving on the back of free advertising providided by the government's constant scare-mongering

Very disappointed to miss this. Will there be a webcast or recording of the event?

It's a strange one. People are just so emotionally invested in how the stock performs. If I was as tilted as most of these guys I wouldn't touch it, long or short

Fair point - I agree that headphones cut you off from the world. Live music is a much richer experience. Same goes for conversing face to face vs Twitter :)

I have no idea what you currently do but if you're looking for a new career that is fun and extremely well paid you might consider investment management. I have a good nose for people who will make good investors. You fit the bill. DM me if you have any interest

Wonderful episode, thank-you. Fyi - I lost someone over the weekend. Perhaps you could share some thoughts on managing emotional pain in the context of CR and the framework of anti-rational memes. The idea that people represent unbounded potential seems to make death more tragic

I am 70% of the way down the same road but Spotify seems benign - convenient way to buy/organise music. Why delete?

Would be fun for him to make a list of his top 4 policies once a year and see how they evolve through his life

I really like the tone of these discussions. In fact, the most beneficial effect I've noticed from exposure to this worldview is that I argue less acrimoniously. I find myself playing with ideas instead of trying to win. Generosity of spirit follows naturally from Popper's ideas

Related issue - how should we think about progress/knowledge creation that entails the destruction of other knowledge (say via the loss of knowledge encoded in ecosystems and species)?

Complex systems (climate etc) exhibit cascade effects. If we keep doing things with a 1/1000 chance of wiping us out then we will eventually be wiped out. Thus to maximise our chances of reaching escape velocity we should take lots of local risks but not global systemic risks

3) A discussion of the precautionary principle. DD implies that more knowledge is always better than less knowledge. The existence of absorbing barriers seems to contradict this. Say we could invent an app that would allow anyone to blow up the world - we clearly shouldn't do it

1) More explanations of key fundamental concepts, especially "hard to vary" & computational universality
2) The application of DDs ideas to everyday life, including how political systems should be structured

Thank you again Logan. Fyi - I personally prefer the "crazed rant" format over the "measured lecture" format you use on your own podcast. Don't hold back :)
